Outcomes

Explicitly teach text structures, such as procedures and some language demands (metalanguage) needed to communicate scientific investigations. Expose students to a range of appropriate texts including scientific explanations, information reports or discussions.

You will achieve this through a focus on:

  • identifying the role of explanatory, procedural and discussion texts and scientific terminology in compiling a report on a scientific investigation

  • learning how to explicitly teach the features of such texts.

Support for the provision of a variety of texts around scientific issues can be found in both levels of ‘Knowing and Thinking’.

Where to next?

In level 2 ‘Processing—Explaining and Publishing’ there is a focus on learning how to help students modify texts to address audience requirements and appropriately select and use media. Oral communication is an important focus as students frequently celebrate their MyScience achievements in a science fair in which students display their investigations.
